The Hammering Hag - Jess
I'm a metalsmith and I create jewellery from my home studio on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. I work with silver, copper, brass, gemstones and pearls. My jewellery is hand-fabricated, which means that each piece is cut, shaped and finished by hand using traditional techniques that are no longer common in mass-produced jewellery.
I first discovered metalsmithing during Covid lockdown when I stumbled upon a TikTok creator who makes bespoke silver jewellery from her home studio. From there, I took a deep dive into all things metalsmithing and began teaching myself using any online resources I could get my hands on. I quickly fell in love with the hand fabrication process. Jewellery that has been hammered and shaped by hand is denser and more durable than mass produced jewellery. But it also has more soul. No two pieces of hand fabricated jewellery are completely identical.
Lots of my jewellery designs are nature inspired. I love to add little leaf and flower details to my work. Some of my designs are made with recycled silver scraps using shot plates and hand-hammered textures. I also embrace made-to-order options that cater to all ring sizes and, during the quieter times of the year, I enjoy working on custom jewellery.
